2010 - Cattle Symposium Results
Held in Conjunction with Cattle and Forage Symposium

The Indiana Beef Cattle Association (IBCA) honored its best at an awards banquet on Friday evening January 15th at the Farm Bureau building following the 2010 Livestock, Forage & Grain Forum. Beef producers from across the state traveled to Indianapolis to salute the men and women who provide the leadership for the Indiana beef industry.

The President's Challenge Award is awarded to those county beef affiliate organizations that strive to serve their members, strengthen their communities and improve the beef business. IBCA honors these groups of beef producers for their commitment to excellence in the areas of consumer education and marketing, membership, producer education, and public policy. Each affiliate president received a plaque from IBCA and a Grill Set from Intervet-Schering Plough Inc. This year's President's Challenge Award winners were: Morgan County Beef Cattle Association for Producer Education, Kosciusko County Cattlemen's Association for Consumer Education & Marketing, North Central Beef Cattle Association for Public Policy and the Johnson County Beef Cattle Association for Membership. Morgan County also received the state's Outstanding Affiliate Award for 2009.

IBCA also recognized Don Ward with a Special Recognition Award given to acknowledge and honor over 20 years of service cutting Hoosier Ribeye Steaks in a specially outfitted trailer behind the Administration Building during the Indiana State Fair. During his tenure, Don has sliced approximately 800,000 steaks for Hoosier fairgoers.

IBCA also presented a Friend of the Industry Award. This award was bestowed onto Jeff Leininger of Intervet Schering-Plough. Jeff has been an unwavering source of support to IBCA through sponsorship of Area Beef Meetings, Hoosier Beef Congress, President's Challenge, Outstanding Cattleman and Outstanding Young Cattleman of the Year Awards.

IBCA honors cattlemen who possess beef management skills and leadership abilities. IBCA's Outstanding Young Cattleman Award for 2009 was given to Brian Deatsman from Leesburg, IN. Brian has been very active in local affiliate outreach as well as local 4-H and FFA programs.

The coveted Outstanding Cattleman of the Year Award was present to Jim Leonard of Morgantown, IN. Jim is very active in the Morgan County affiliate organization, FFA, Farm Bureau, 4-H and community outreach to promote a positive image for the beef industry in Indiana.

The most prestigious award given at the awards banquet is the long-time Robert C. Peterson Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2009 award winner was Dr. Kern Hendrix, a retired Purdue Extension Beef Specialist and past Secretary and Coordinator of IBEP. Mr. Robert C. Peterson was in attendance to give the award to Dr. Hendrix. Dr. Hendrix expressed his hope that IBEP would continue to be successful in providing Indiana producers with current and advantageous data for years to come.

The Indiana Beef Cattle Association is an affiliate of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and is the state's member group and issues manager for all segments of the beef cattle industry including cattle breeders, producers and feeders. It is the grass roots policy development organization for the beef business.
